A 501(c)4 organization, the Five Valleys Chapter of SCI funds numerous education efforts throughout the year. These efforts are made possible through the generous support of our members and interested businesses and organizations. While individuals and companies are often approached regarding a donation during our Annual Banquet planning, donations are accepted at any time of the year by downloading and completing our general donation form. 100% of our income is used by SCI with over 70% staying here locally (click here for a listing of projects undertaken by the Five Valleys Chapter in the last decade). What are we doing today? One of our efforts in 2009 was the development and printing of literature for the Bear Aware program that is directed towards hunters. Prior to this, most of the literature was directed to non-hunters and ignored key safety points that are unique to hunting and harvesting game in bear country. Through the SCIF Sables, the Five Valleys Chapter has placed, and continues to place, Safari-in-a-Box Educational tools. What is a Safari-in-a-Box? It is a hands-on kindergarten through 12th grade educational learning tool for anyone who has a desire to educate others about wildlife and habitat. It gives teachers and others who work with young people resources and ideas to introduce youth to important concepts of habitat, wildlife management, and impacts resulting from human and wildlife interactions. For many, the kit is the gateway to appreciation of the outdoor world and provides their only contact with a wild animal. The Five Valleys Chapter also continues to support the SCI Foundation's American Wilderness Leadership Schools by sponsoring local teachers to attend this enriching educational program. The program introduces participants to the complexity of environmental and wildlife management issues, and the shooting sports (rifle, pistol, trap, muzzleloader, and box) with an emphasis on firewrm safety and use. College education units are provided. If you are interested in learning more about Sables, please contact Bonita Smith at 406.589.3948. Do you have a program or education effort that you would like to suggest? Please contact us at activity@fivevalleyschaptersci.org with your idea. |
